When speaking with our staff about our 30 year anniversary this month, we were able to learn and reflect a lot on what it is about Dearneside Fabrications that makes us ‘tick’.
A recurring theme in this was the culture we’ve built, the people we’ve hired and the overall working environment that we have created; with many of our team citing this as the reason they choose Dearneside.
In this article, we take a closer look at what exactly it is about our environment here at Dearneside that’s led up to our company-wide success, speaking with Tyler, Roger, Shaun and Cheryl – each from different departments.
Tyler Marlow, Estimator
Time at Dearneside: 1 year
Tyler is an estimator who joined Dearneside just over a year ago, following an apprenticeship elsewhere. In this role, he takes charge over pricing projects and liaising with clients.
Throughout his career, Tyler has always known about Dearneside and was ambitious to learn more about our company.
“I always knew of the Dearneside name and the meaning behind it. It’s a kind of reputation that other companies in the sector have modelled themselves on.”
Ever since coming to the team, Tyler has proved to be an incredible asset to the team.
“It’s the culture here that I value the most, everyone is just so involved in every aspect of a project. If you need help, people will – it’s as simple as that.”
Roger Hardwick, S / S Foreman
Time at Dearneside: 10 years
Responsible for scheduling, coordinating and supervising the work of all site operatives, Roger also plays a mentoring role for our apprentices here at Dearneside.
Having worked in the industry his entire life, Roger joined our team with an ambition to progress his career and ‘do more’. Since then, over 10 years ago now, he has been responsible for mentoring over 8 apprentices, supporting them through every aspect of their time at Dearneside.
“I take great pride in looking after the apprentices here at Dearneside. I feel I contribute a lot to the supportive culture here, and feel recognised for it, too.”
“The employees here are all hard-working people, we go above and beyond to strive for our goals. More than that, we just get on, without this kind of environment I don’t think we’d be half as successful.”
Shaun Harrison, Contracts Manager
Time at Dearneside: 9 years
As Contracts Manager, Shaun oversees each of our projects at Dearneside from start to finish.
Having been in the construction industry for over 20 years, for Shaun it’s the people of Dearneside that stand out to him the most, and his reason for having been with our team for almost 10 years now.
“It might be a cliche but it really is a family at Dearneside. We’re not just colleagues, we’re friends who genuinely enjoy what we do.
I think that environment is really quite rare in our industry, so when you find it, you don’t let it go.”
Cheryl McHale, Logistics Coordinator
Time at Dearneside: 5 years
Cheryl works in our logistics department, organising and reporting on the transportation, quality and compliance of Dearneside’s operations.
With a long history of experience in working in administrative roles, Cheryl first came to Dearneside after having been recommended by a friend. Unhappy in her previous role, Cheryl decided to reach out in 2018, and hasn’t looked back since!
“I first joined Dearneside in an administration role, before being promoted into my current logistics role.
What I really like about it here is how different each day is. My job is so varied and we get to work on fantastic projects like the Battersea Power Station – that was a particular highlight for me.”
On a broader level, it’s the support at Dearneside that also keeps Cheryl invested in the company.
“No matter how busy we are, there’s always someone there to support you and the very best technology for us to do our jobs well. It’s very much an environment where management wouldn’t ask you to do something unless they couldn’t do it themselves. We’re all just striving to create great quality work for our clients.”
